Preoperative Instructions

  • Please wear a shirt or blouse that is easy to put on and take off.
  • To make surgical prep easier, please do not wear make-up the day of the surgery.
  • We recommend showering or bathing the day before, or the morning of, your surgery.
  • Do not eat or drink anything starting midnight the day before the surgery. You may take your medications with a small sip of water the morning of the surgery. If your surgery is in the late afternoon or evening, please avoid food or drink starting 8 hours before the surgery time.
  • If you are diabetic, please consult your primary care physician regarding use of insulin or diabetic medications on the day of the surgery. Typically, these are held or have the doses decreased as you will not be eating or drinking until after the surgery.
  • Please check with your surgeon whether aspirin or other blood thinners need to be stopped for retina surgery, and if so, for how long. This is taken on a case-by-case basis and varies by surgeon as well.

Day of Surgery Instructions

  • Please do not disturb the eye patch and shield, it will be removed the next day in office.
  • Please limit activity and avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exertion.
  • You may shower below the neck and use a clean towel to clean above the neck.
  • Mild pain and soreness around the eye are common, it is safe to take Tylenol or NSAIDs as needed (unless your primary care doctor has told you otherwise).
  • You may resume your previous medications, including aspirin and blood thinners, unless instructed otherwise.
  • Positioning instructions will be given directly by the physician, please try to follow these instructions as closely as possible to maximize surgical outcomes.
  • Please bring your prescribed eye drops to the appointment tomorrow, where you will be given further instructions.
  • If you have a gas or air bubble placed in the eye, it is important to avoid travel to elevation and air travel until the bubble is 100% dissolved as this can lead to permanent vision loss. Please obtain clearance from your surgeon before such travel.
